Flood Plain

Running this morning was full of beautiful surprises.

Where typically there is a running path through our beautiful neighborhood park, we have lately found a small lake!  Oh, how I wish I had a canoe.  It would be amazing to paddle around over flooded pathways through that still water.

This morning was exceptionally pretty.  The sun shone bright, a short reprieve from the stormy sky that was just within reach.  We saw the tiniest little brown rabbit and a handful of blue jays.

On our return home we were drenched in a downpour, quite exhilarating!

At home, I made juice.  Ginger, lemon, kale, beet, apple, carrot...a reward for the morning's run and a great finish to the start of a new day.

Fresh Inspiration to Work Out

Have you heard of Nike+??  I'm so impressed with it since getting his and hers Nike running shoes.  Most importantly..CUTE, mine are the bright loud blue pair, and super comfy.  We also bought this little gadget that fits in a cubby inside the shoe which keeps track of so many details of your workout!  A few things the Nike+ gadget can do are, show your running route on google maps, show elevation, track miles, and count calories burned.  All of this is logged on my iphone while I walk or run and then transfered to the Nike+ website where you can try fitness challenges, make goals, and basically track your own workout success.  Matt and I are really excited for this new inspiration to work out.

Fitness - if it came in a bottle, everybody would have a great body.  ~Cher

Check out for yourself what Nike+ is all about here.

Happy Friday All!

Creamy Pesto Adventure

Summer makes me CRAVE salad!  Today I was out of my favorite salad dressing (hazelnut vinaigrette) but I had to have something on my salad..so I dug some stuff out of the fridge door and got crazy.

Faking It Creamy Pesto Dressing

One Part:  Olive Oil Mayo
One Part:  Pesto Sauce (leftover from pasta)
Splash:  Lemon Juice (I actually only had lime, still GOOD)

Pesto was so good with sweet apple, crunchy celery and carrots, and quick toasted sourdough croutons over romaine. Afterwards, I was all set to take the big dog for his swim in the river (he nearly pulled me in, I have the bloody scrape to prove it) but I wasn't crabby because my belly was full of yummy salad and pesto.

Good Salad, Naughty Pup. :)

Forest Park Revisited

This time we went to Forest Park with maps.  You can get an incredible little packet of maps for the park at REI which is helpful for planning specific hikes.  We hiked the Big Stump hike.  You'll notice there are no photos of said Big Stump...it was not that worthy.  I much more enjoyed the mushrooms clinging to the trees, bug life, and misty ambiance the day provided.

And..Pizza from Pizza Schmizza rounded off the 6.2 mile hike.  Completely great excursion.

Forest Park

Yesterday, I dug out my hiking boots, camelback, and daypack for what turned into an 8 mile exploration of one of Portland's amazing trail parks, Forest Park.

We are so fortunate to live in a city where over 70 miles of trails are available for hiking and biking within the city limits.  It was interesting feeling like I was in the middle of a forest, secluded from it all, but could still sometimes hear the sounds of the city filtering in through the trees.  Yesterday, the trail showed me creatures; snail, slug, caterpillar, crow, finch...and plants; trillium, fern, catchweed, maple, foxglove, mushroom...only to name a few.  In a month there will be so many berries; huckleberry, salmon berry, and even raspberry.  Already salmon berries were ripe for picking.  The sun was brilliant but we were shaded beneath a canopy of giant trees covered in moss and vines, the air was humid.  Through the peaceful shade of the trees, tiny bursts of sunlight found its way down through it all to land on spiderwebs and light up leaves.

I'm looking forward to returning to hike the ridge, where there will be views of Portland's beautiful old bridges and Mt Hood.

Tennis Anyone?

Remember these?

I took tennis lessons one summer as a kid and I also remember hitting the ball around with my mom at the park with our dated tennis rackets (you know the ones made out of wood that weigh 20 lbs).  I've always really liked the game, but I am really loving it right now (It could be my nicer racket...).

For the last month +, I've been playing with Matt as much as we can, which has been four or five times a week.  We are up to playing till whoever wins six games (that was me today, yes!), which means that sometimes, like today, we play nearly ten games in a row.  And it makes me feel amazing, but it's not just the endorphins pumping (or that I won!!!) because I did some checking up and look what I found out via active.com:

The Facts:
"1. People who participate in tennis three hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause, according to physician Ralph Paffenbarger of Harvard University School of Public Health. (Paffenbarger not only studied over 10,000 people over a period of 20 years in his landmark 'College Alumni Health Study', but also finished over 150 marathons over the age of 45.)

2. Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes or non-athletes, according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues in a study done at Southern Connecticut State University.

3. Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain, reported scientists at the University of Illinois.

4. Tennis outperforms golf, inline skating and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics, according to Dr. Jim Gavin -- author of The Exercise Habit.

5. Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating, or cycling, according to studies on caloric expenditures.
Is it any wonder that scientists and physicians world-wide view tennis as the most healthful activity to participate in? Other sports may provide excellent health benefits, as well as stimulate mental and emotional growth. But no other sport received such acclaim for its great benefits physically, mentally and emotionally."

Rollerblades and Gummi Bears

This day is so dang beautiful, I can't stay out of it.  First I walked the dog (who was not a complete jerk, like he was last time, when every dog on the block decided it was 'harass Reuben day').  The walk was plenty long for me to soak up enough sun for a few day's dose.  But that not being enough, I wrangled the kids after school for a trip to our 7Eleven (.9 miles one way) for ice creams and gummi bears.  So now I'm feeling fully sunny, and like I've done my proper day's workout!  (Not to mention the nostalgia of the taste of gummi bears.)  I'm just feeling overly excited for summer and good weather.  *perma-grin*
