The Juice Fasting Experience

I made it through eight days of juice fasting recently.  I was aiming for ten, but MyBoy got the best of me during our outing in which he was rewarded for his amazing grades.  We putt putt golfed together and then went out to lunch.

My breaking point was somewhere between his sweet face wanting to share lunch with me, and my favorite dish at McMennamin's; their West African Peanut Soup.  Eating is awesome.

Juicing has been a part of my life for many years.  I go through phases of juicing every day for months and then a dry spell, but I always come back to it because I love fresh juice!

During my fast, I experienced a beautiful clear sense of body and mind.  There were more days where I was extremely productive, and a few where I was dragging.  Every day I was challenged with the temptation to break the fast, and I enjoyed enforcing my will to keep with it.

To stay focussed, I photographed many of my juice concoctions because the ingredients are so beautiful, but I also found that when I engaged in the act of photographing the food, it helped my mind and body to appreciate the sustenance it was getting....almost like giving thanks.

I also mixed my recipes up a lot to keep my body interested.  I generally had success juicing almost everything, even bell peppers!  I especially enjoyed juice with papaya and pineapple added to some veggies.  Juicing beets is my favorite.  Most of my juice recipes are at least half vegetable (or green juices).

One day ended up to be a particularly bad juice recipe day. I tried using collard greens and they are oh way too bitter (kale and spinach are much better)!  Later on the same day, I made a juice with too much lemon and too much ginger.  I think that was on one of my tired days....plus two very bitter faces!  Another challenge for me was cooking meals for the kids that I couldn't eat...almost too tempting!

It has been a few weeks now since being off my juice fast.  I have found myself not wanting dairy or meat and have changed my eating habits to accomodate.  I crave juice still every morning, sometimes a make a smoothie, but every morning since the fast I have started my day with raw fruits and veggies.

Fasting can be an incredible exercise in re-evaluating habits.  I noticed how much better I felt drinking most likely three times as much water as I normally do in a day.  I also kicked coffee during my fast (wow, do I appreciate that cuppa now!).

Which brings me to gratitude.

Fasting brings that emotion to the front of everything.  When your body is hungry, it is also that much more grateful for any sustenance it is given.  It feels good to have taken a step back, appreciated the abundant availability of food which I experience every day for myself and my family, and to have made a conscious choice to go without for a while.

Juicing and Being Selfish

I didn't exactly make a new year's resolution.  I did vaguely talk to myself about taking better care of me.  You know, that person who takes care of everyone else??  Well, I know she's been a bit neglected...

Today, I am on day three of a ten day juice fast.  Yep, only juice from my trusty juicer...all...day...long.  (I could really go for some pasta and marinara sauce right now.)

My main focus is to cleanse my body as a sort of transition into some lifestyle changes.  Nothing drastic, just getting enough sleep, enough exercise, enough time to myself, and feeding myself three times a day.  Seriously, amazed that I am raising healthy kids and pets, when I look at the way I take care of myself!

Two things I would recommend to anyone considering juicing regularly are getting a high quality juicer and a good juicing book.

I just traded my old (7 years!!) juicer in for a slow juicer (Omega brand) and the actual juice that comes out of it is incredible!  It just looks like it has more vitamins in it and tastes richer too.

A good book is helpful because drinking juice all day means you need variety, and some new recipes can get you putting things you never thought could be juiced in that juicer.  I found out that I really like melon juice in the morning, and that a juiced sweet pepper isn't as bad as it sounds.  I'm using The Complete Book of Juicing.

So far I am feeling great about the juice fast.  I just keep telling myself that I can do this and am drinking a lot of tea.

Cheers, to my health and yours!

The Efficient Juicer

Sometimes all it takes is a good short cut.

As you probably know, I am a big fan of fresh juice.  What I am not a big fan of is...cleaning the juicer!!  And being as busy as you also probably know that I am, the whole cleaning process involved with juicing can be a turn off.

But wait!  Problem solved!  There can be juice and a busy lifestyle!

I started juicing in bulk.

I spend some time chopping everything up, carrot, beet, lemon, celery, ginger....and as I juice, I pour it into one big pitcher.  This makes the juice mixture evenly mixed.

Immediately after I finish, I pour equal parts into smaller containers which I freeze!

It is very refreshing to drink the juice as it slowly thaws throughout the morning, great to have at hand as I start my day!  And now I have days and days worth of juice and only one day of juicing and cleaning.

Flood Plain

Running this morning was full of beautiful surprises.

Where typically there is a running path through our beautiful neighborhood park, we have lately found a small lake!  Oh, how I wish I had a canoe.  It would be amazing to paddle around over flooded pathways through that still water.

This morning was exceptionally pretty.  The sun shone bright, a short reprieve from the stormy sky that was just within reach.  We saw the tiniest little brown rabbit and a handful of blue jays.

On our return home we were drenched in a downpour, quite exhilarating!

At home, I made juice.  Ginger, lemon, kale, beet, apple, carrot...a reward for the morning's run and a great finish to the start of a new day.

Vitamins, Oh How I Love You

It has been crazy hectic around here with shopping, my jewelry selling madly, daily trips to the post office, kid slumber parties, my husband's birthday....I'm sure there has been even more going on and this is all in the last week!  So of course, we are all sick.

That means it is time to get out the juicer!  It's like a vitamin and antioxidant army set loose inside your body ready to fight for good health.

I'm counting on this juicing to get this family healthily through the holidays, there isn't room in all of the holiday hustle for being sick.  So get ready, juicer....for a lot of juicing love.

My Favorite Juice:

2 large carrots
3 kale leaves
1 celery stalk
1/2 of an apple
