Christmas In The Shop

Looking back on the last two months is a blur!  I felt like a Christmas elf, working away on special gifts for so many many people.  I couldn't have ever predicted how busy I would be this year.  Compared to last year I think I was 6 times busier!

A big thank you to all of my wonderful customers!

I couldn't have done it without my three helpers and two fuzzy distractions.  Mygirl and Myboy helped by cutting jewelry cards, printing shipping labels, rinsing and tarnishing rings, making meals, cleaning, and just generally being awesome kids.  Matt was incredible about keeping up with the box making even with the insane demand (as of today, he will have made nearly 200 boxes since november began!!).  And, of course, the puppies were always under foot keeping me company as I worked.  Tarnished & True is definitely a small family run business!

Now that the holiday rush has come to a close, I am settling into my own holiday fun; getting my gifts ready, sending off cards, and enjoying the kids home for winter break.

And....I cannot wait for Christmas!

New Pretties & The Beauty of a Handmade Nation

1.  Turquoise Droplet Ring in Sterling Silver
2.  Candy Ring in Sterling Silver and Pink Opal
3.  Candy Ring in Sterling Silver and Lapis Lazuli
4.  Sterling Silver Post Earrings: Triad
5.  Turquoise Droplet Earrings in Sterling Silver

I have been so absorbed in jewelry making lately, kicking out new designs to start off the holiday season.  It has begun!  Already people are coming to my shop for christmas gifts...this is going to be a busy few months!

This year, I am planning to do a fair amount of my own christmas shopping from handmade shops on Etsy as well as from the usual local shops in town.  As my shop continues to get bigger and bigger, I see how the concept of a handmade nation is catching on.  New faces are turning to Etsy every day, trusting their purchase with the little shop, rather than turning to the old familiar massive chain department stores.

It is a beautiful thing to be able to make a living as an artist.

Gratified Fridays: Dream Workspace Realized

<<Before...>>

<<After...>>

Feeling really really good about this fantastic workspace!  The new house came already equipped with a room just ready for me to claim as my own Tarnished & True headquarters.  All I had to do was unpack, paint, and arrange my stuff.

I love spending time in this space!

You can see a big map up on the wall; a birthday gift from Matt.  It is for keeping a record of all my sales.  I still need to get the world map up and the pins out and start pinning!  It is really amazing to think about all of the places I have mailed jewelry to.  Only missing three states out of the whole US, and have touched quite a few international destinations, such as the Netherlands, France, Italy, Canada, China, the UK, and Australia.

I also found time to re-photograph the last photo found in all of my listings, of the beautiful packaging I send out with my jewelry.  Matt makes such pretty boxes!

It feels so good to see things coming together, and to be settling into this new workspace.  So grateful for such a nice place to work!

Gratified Fridays: Working Girl

It has officially been a year since I opened my Etsy shop, Tarnished & True, and things have only grown more and more steady.

So... happy birthday to my shop, and the fruition of an idea, and a little homegrown business that is all my own.

And Thank You------>

A big thanks to all of my wonderful customers for showing me that my jewelry is beautiful enough to buy.

All of my readers, thank you for the encouragement and feedback on my work, that has been priceless.

Thanks you especially to Matt for all of those beautiful little wooden crates you have made (over 200) that make my shop super special.

And to the kids, thanks for giving up your mom to her work bench even when you want so badly to play Nintendo with her, or watch bad sci-fi TV shows.

Love to you all.

<3

Now I am back to the workbench to kick out all of those Mother's Day orders that are keeping me from doing my homework. :)

Spring Cleaning: New Designs

Isn't it nice to have a fresh clean look?  You have probably noticed the new look around the blog (I must have caught that spring fever)!

I have also given some time to redesigning my shop's look including business cards and packaging! There is now a pretty consistent branding happening with my shop and blog, hurray!

Packaging Restyle:

Professionally Printed Business Cards:

So there it is, all pretty and branded.  Since packaging my jewelry is one of my favorite things, this just makes it even better!

More springish happenings...some patio gardening!  I love my scraggly geraniums.

Are you all busy spring cleaning?

Packaging Restyle

Packaging is important.  It is also one of my favorite parts of selling my jewelry...wrapping up something in a beautiful way to present it to a stranger on the other end of transit, just makes me happy.

I have read a lot of forums about packaging on Etsy, and believe it or not, there are so many sellers out there that don't package their goods in a special way, using reasons like...it's a waste of materials, money, time...

But what you miss out on as a seller when you don't have great packaging is a chance at branding your business, and making your customer feel, well, appreciated, or loved, or you know, like they matter.

To me, packaging is another way to say thank you!

Since I opened Tarnished & True, I have sent all of my orders packaged in a little handmade wooden crate (made generously by my handy husband).  To create that packaging, Matt is responsible for, cutting the wood, making the box, burnishing the lettering onto the box, and then cutting cardboard so I can wrap and ship the box.

The box looks like this:

What was once a fun pastime for Matt has become an overwhelming demand with about two orders a day...(can you believe he works his stressful job and is enrolled full time in a masters program, and still makes time for these boxes??)...so we have come to a crossroads of sorts in terms of efficiency and time...

The easy solution would be to switch to pre-made paper boxes.  The only problem is that we love the little crates!

So we came up with a few innovations to make making the packaging more efficient.

Instead of using cardboard that Matt would cut up for me, I now use brown paper to wrap the packages up myself for shipping.

Instead of Matt burnishing the lettering on the box (he is much more patient than I am at that), I designed a stamp!  It is being made as we speak, and I cannot wait to try out the wood ink stamp pad and see how it looks on the box!

The new design looks like this (very crate-like, don't you think?):

Restyling just a few steps of my packaging is going to make a huge difference, and save us a lot of time!

If you still aren't convinced that packaging is an amazing part of any online business, here is some real life feedback from some happy customers who shopped Tarnished & True.

"OMG I was so thrilled to open this darling little wooden package!! The rings are even daintier than I imagined and my babies' names so cute and tiny, I just love it. Annie even "extra" customized the font for me by dotting the "i's" in my daughter's name and it turned out great. Love love LOVE how they turned out, Annie. Thank you so much. This is a forever keepsake -- something I will get to pass on to my kids when they've grown."

"Love them! LOVE THEM! They fit perfectly on my tiny fingers, no mistakes or errors, exactly what they were represented to be. I could not be happier! Annie was a saint, very communicative, patient, willing and understanding. The order was finished and received on the exact schedule her policies list. I had my beautiful rings in their beautiful box sitting on my lap exactly 10 days after placing my order. I really can not express enough how fantastic this entire experience has been. Thank you, thank you so very, very much Annie!!"

"The earrings are gorgeous and classy, and came in a beautiful wooden box. I will definitely be shopping from TarnishedAndTrue again!"

"I LOVE them so much! Just as I pictured in my mind and the workmanship is A++++. The presentation (sweetest little box & raffia, which the cats enjoyed) was super excellent. I am a true TarnishedAndTrue Groupie now! Thank you so much. Will be ordering more!"

I just love knowing that my customers enjoy opening their purchases, that my packaging made them smile, and that I made a positive lasting impression for my business.

WOYWW: In Numbers

Here it is folks, the bench this week.  While I was working, I thought about the past week, since last Wednesday.  All I can say is...A....LOT!

13-separate jewelry orders filled
21-total rings made
3-earrings made
102-temperature on Monday
8-feet of sterling silver wire purchased
803-views in shop
2-sleepless nights
4-assignments due
1-quiz due
2-plays read

I bring this all up because, isn't it funny how timing works out?  When I signed up for spring classes, I was getting maybe an order a week in the shop.  Now, as I am enrolled full time, my shop has completely taken off, and I am finding I get an average of 2 orders a day.  I love my shop!  I love making jewelry!  I want to be doing just that.  I have all of these great ideas to redesign my business cards, redesign parts of my packaging, change around some of my listings....But this whole school thing is really getting in the way, and I am paying for it (notice the fever of 102 I mentioned).

And then there are those weird unplanned for happenings that are out of your control, and eat up even more energy.

Monday night the wind abducted our puppy.  We forgot to lock the front door, and it was so windy and stormy that around 2 AM the wind threw the door open!  Out wandered the puppy, Bella into the night.  An hour later the doorbell and the big dog Reuben's barking (what a good boy for staying in the house!) woke us up to our neighbor, the policeman.  (I don't call our neighborhood "Pleasantville" for nothing.)  He was worried about our door being wide open.  Matt combed the neighborhood, I couldn't sleep.  Finally at 6AM we got a call from the people who had found her (thank you, nice people!).

Next week is Spring Break for me.  I cannot wait!

No more pencils, no more books....

Gratified Fridays: A dream to fruition

Officially, I am not a new Etsy seller....yes, the holidays have indeed initiated me to the higher ranks of Etsy (and all the hustle and bustle that requires)!  This is my very first christmas selling jewelry ever.

Between the dates of November 30th and December 9th (today!!), I have filled 14 orders for jewelry from my shop!  So you see, I have been busy!

More personally, I have been balancing the joy of two kids with a viral cough, doctor appointments, and missed school.  Also my husband decided to have his birthday this week (tomorrow!!).  Perfect timing for the shop to pick up, don't you think??  (No time like the present.)

I also would like to say that I am very humbled by the response to my shop.  I honestly did not expect to be busier than 'normal' and have been overwhelmed (in a good way) by the purchasing that has been happening!

I appreciate the positive feedback so much, I cannot tell you how nice it is to know that my designs are enjoyed by more people than just myself.  I never went into this to make it rich or big, just to be creative and explore my favorite medium (metal).

I feel like I have made it.  I dreamt something up, built an idea, acted on it, and things are starting to happen!

Today, I am grateful for the good fortune of customers, and for my hobby in metalsmithing.

I am pleased to share with you my top sellers, for christmas gifting:

A Brilliant Day

Some days are like that, everything falls into place, and maybe, just one small victory means the world.  I am having that day today, and am so thankful!  Really, I'm so pleased with today that I am a bit speechless.

I woke up to two (not one) sales in my Etsy shop, and then, Chandra (one of my much read faves..you should check her out) on her blog A Stylish Little Lady, gave me the 'Versatile Blogger Award'.

After the kids left for school, I got to go shopping with my honey where I picked up this amazing find (only in dark blue/teal).  Juicy Couture Cardigan:

And it was a bit on the colder side so I got to wear my boots (love sweater and boot season)!!  Then Matt took us to pizza and we got to hang out and talk about life.  These adult moments are so priceless and I love Matt's days off.  :)

Last but not least, and before I'm off to Back To School Night....I'm very happy to report two new pairs of earrings that I had time to photograph and list today:

Gaia Hoops in Hammered Copper

Isis Hoops in Hammered Brass

Phew, that was a lot of great stuff that made my day!  I hope you all had a good one too.

New Metal Jewelry

I'm not sure if I would yet call my little Etsy shop successful, but I have made 9 sales to date!  Yay!  I feel really good about making sales with such a new shop and it being summer, the slowest part of the year for business.  And, most importantly I'm enjoying the work.  It's really such a rush to find out you have an order, get the jewelry all prettied and polished up, package the entire thing, and mail it off for someone else to love.  (I've had two orders from Canada--Canadians must love my work, don't you think?).  So, all in all it's been rewarding in more ways than just a little extra income.

Here's what I've been working on lately:

Khafra Pyramid Posts

Truth Seeker Sterling Silver Link Bracelet

Traditional Basket Earring Textured
One thing I find challenging about selling online is that your buyers aren't able to physically hold or try on products.  One of my latest infatuations with metal is in hand making chains.  They feel amazing, with the weight of the metal and the texture that only hand made chains have.  I want my buyers to experience it!  That especially makes me want to try a brick and mortar store soon...or maybe a craft fair.  But for now I am focussing on the back to school vibe coming this way.  I can't believe the kids go back in less than two weeks.  Time to arm them with new clothes, pencils, and backpacks, and prepare for the jarring reality of schedules and the daily grind.  (I am looking forward to some quiet around the house and more time to work out, shhh don't tell the kids.)

On Packaging & Branding & Etsy

I thought a lot about those things before I opened my Etsy Shop and actually before I even started making jewelry I wanted to sell.  Everything from the type of jewelry I make, the name of my shop, the way I package sold items, my business card, and the way I take my photos has been thought out completely.  This is branding.

I love creating a look, coming up with a feel or brand for something and then having that trusty theme to fall back on for every visual challenge there is in having a business.  It makes things much simpler when you have the ideas from the get go, but it's also important to let these things grow naturally.  I am constantly re-shooting jewelry as I get better at taking close-ups.  I re-edit my listings when I think of something that could sound or look better.  It sounds tedious and it is.  But I think in the land of online marketplaces, that branding is the most important thing a seller can do to promote themselves.

I hope my shop speaks to the ideas of "natural", "rustic", and "antiqued".

One of my favorite things about my Etsy shop besides making the jewelry product is the packaging that I came up with (and admittedly my hubby has a big part in).  I got to mail another package off today and It makes me feel so good every time!  Would you love to get this in the mail?

The cost of making this little wooden "crate" is calculated in my shipping costs, I really love the way it looks and the handmade message it sends.  Matt makes the box.  I pencil on the Shop Name and then Matt burnishes the letters into the wood.  The order is packed in the crate with eco-friendly wood shavings and then the whole thing gets ribboned and surrounded in cardboard.  That's it!  Makes me smile every time.  I feel a little like Santa too.

New Handmade Jewelry

Bali Hoops

Everyday Turquoise Chain

Here's a sneak peek at the newest jewelry I've made for my shop on Etsy, Tarnished & True.  Things are really coming together for me now that I have my own studio to work in.  I just can't get enough time in there!

I have decided that my jewelry will be completely handmade...every link is soldered closed individually, each clasp and ear hook are hand formed.  I think this makes for a more artisan feel and allows me to really stand behind my work as genuinely handmade.  I only use fine silver and precious stones.  I so enjoy hammering, polishing, and forming every piece by hand.  This work truly makes me feel accomplished and fulfilled.  I can't wait to get even more pieces ready for the shop!
